How to Download & Unzip Files from the Internet

To Download from Internet Explorer:

  • right-click on the link
  • select "save target as"
  • navigate to the folder where you want to save the file

To unzip after downloading:

  • right-click on the zip file within Windows Explorer (My Computer)
  • from "folder view" select "extract" or "extract all"
  • follow the prompts

Project 1 - Create a Real Estate Flyer

Project Specifications:

Start with a new blank document and create the real estate flyer shown in the link below.
Use these options and pictures:

  1. Set all page margins to .75”
  2. Enter all text by typing
    (hint: check your paragraph spacing, set it to “0” before and after, enter the text first, then pictures)
  3. “For Sale” Heading font: Times New Roman, 80 pt
  4. Sub-heading (address): Arial 20 pt
  5. All other text: Arial 12pt
  6. Center the Heading, Sub-Heading and Main Picture
  7. Use bold and bullets to match the page design
  8. Resize the main picture to be 6" wide (hint: Wrap Text Inline or Top and Bottom)
  9. The main picture style is “Metal Oval”
  10. The other picture styles are “Soft Edge Oval” (hint: Wrap Text Tight)
  11. The "Contact" information should be placed in the footer, centered
    OR at the bottom of the page centered

Project Specifications:

Create a 1 page newsletter containing 3 articles using the following options:

  1. Create a 1 page newsletter containing 3 articles using the following options:

    1 Create a new Word document

    2 Use the text in this link - newsletter_start_text.txt

    3 Set all page margins to Narrow (.5")

    4 Select all text and apply the Normal Style

    5 Re-Define the Normal Style as follows:

    • Font: Calibri 11
    • Font Color: Automatic (Black)
    • Paragraph Line Spacing: Single
    • Paragraph Before and After Spacing: 6 pts

    6 Re-Define the Title Style as follows:

    • Font: Garamond, 36, Bold
    • Font Color: White (White, Background 1)
    • Centered Alignment
    • Shading: Grey-50%, Accent 3, Darker 25%
    • Paragraph Line Spacing: Single
    • Paragraph Before Spacing: 0 pts
    • Paragraph After Spacing: 18 pts

    7 Re-Define the Heading 1 Style as follows:

    • Font: Garamond, 14, Bold
    • Font Color: Automatic (Black)
    • Paragraph Line Spacing: Single
    • Paragraph Before and After Spacing: 6 pts
    • Border: Bottom

    8 Apply the Title Style to the top line “New Jersey Computer Club”

    9 Select all the text below the Title line except the last line that starts with “Copyright NJ Computer…”

    • Create a 2 column design with .3" between the columns
    • Set paragraph alignment is "Justify"
    • Set Hyphenation to “Automatic” and limit consecutive hyphens to 1
    • Apply the Heading 1 Style to the article headings
    • Apply Bullets under the first article to match the page design
    • If needed, set a column break before the paragraph that begins with “First, let's examine the difference…” so that it’s at the top of the second column

    10 Center the last line that starts with “Copyright NJ Computer…” and insert the copyright symbol

    11 Add a page border, double line, 1/2 pt

    12 Insert the following 3 images and re-size them to 50% of their original size

    13 Add a Picture Effect to both the “explore.jpg” and “google.gif” pictures:

    • Shadow -> Outer -> Offset Diagonal Bottom Right

    14 Place the pictures and complete the layout using the finished page as a guide

    15 Note, it does not have to match exactly word-for-word to the final when placing the pictures and wrapping text

Project 3 - Create a Certificate Mail Merge

Project Specifications:

Start with a downloaded template and merge the names from the data file to the certificate. Use these options:

  1. Download the award certificate template called "Membership certificate" from Microsoft Office Online
  2. Note: Either insert inside the text box placeholders or replace the placeholders with text
  3. Customize the certificate as follows:
    • insert the date "January 1, 2013" in the blank line after "in good standing since"
    • inset the current day, month and year in the placeholders for "Set down and signed this" and "day of"
    • enter "Computer Club" for "is a member of"
  4. Adjust the bottom table for President and Secretary
    • add a row above the existing row
    • enter "Frank Asciutto" is the President
    • enter Your Name as the Secretary
    • change the font size to both names to 20
    • adjust the line spacing and border options to match the final - the names should be directly above the title lines
  5. Start the mail merge, letters option
  6. Use the Data.xls file as the data source or "Mail Merge Data.xlsx" from your Frank_Exercises folder, they are both the same
  7. Insert the Merge Fields "First Name" and "Last Name" into the document under "This certifies that"
  8. Be sure to separate the first and last names by a space

  4. Change the page title “All about bamboo” to Calibri 26, all caps, spacing expanded by 1 pt
  5. Change the sub- title “Information sheet” to Calibri 18, all caps, spacing 24 pt after
  6. Change the following headings to Calibri 14, Shading White, Background 1, Darker 15%
    • MOVING TO A NEW HOME
    • STAYING HEALTHY
    • KEEPING BUGS AT BAY
  7. Change the following headings to Calibri 12, Italic
    • MITES
    • MEALY BUGS
  8. Change the 4 sentences under “STAYING HEALTHY” to Bullets, Arrow style
  9. Insert a page break before “KEEPING BUGS AT BAY” if needed
  10. Save your work
